The Crater of Diamonds State Park recorded its second largest find of the year last week when Doug Lay of Hernando, FL turned up a 1.95 rough brown diamond.  The brown stone, about the size of a pea, is the largest brown diamond discovered at the park in two years.  Only one diamond unearthed this year, a 1.99 yellow diamond dubbed the Stacey Diamond discovered by a ninth grader from Texas, was larger than Lay's find.
Lay has not yet named the brown diamond but says he plans to keep it as a souvenir of the park.  Park officials describe it as having a "bright metallic shine" and a pitted surface.
In 2012, the park has recorded 493 diamond finds, 13 of which have weighed more than 1 carat.  The Crater of Diamonds became an official state park in 1972.
