Garnet: January's Birthstone

The word garnet comes from the Latin word for pomegranate, granatum.  If you break open a pomegranate and see the glossy red seeds you will see why the gemstone was given its name.  The deep red color is what we usually associate with garnet, the birthstone for the month of January.
But garnets come in a wide range of colors from dark red with brownish undertones to intense green.  If you were born in January, rich orange and golden hues, striking greens, and soft violet and lavender are all options in garnet gemstones.
Spessartite, the distinctive orange-red garnet is colored by manganese and, in its redder versions, iron.  It is found in Nigeria, Mozambique, and Namibia.

Tsavorite departs even further from the traditional red garnet.  Found for the first time in the 1960's in the border where Kenya and Tanzania meet, tsavorites range in color from light to very dark green.

Rhodolite, found in North Carolina and named for the rhododendron flower, is a lighter, brighter red with purple or raspberry undertones.
Lucky January babies have a rainbow of birthstone colors to choose from!
